Full car license holders can ride 50cc machines without L plates and without any further training providing the license was issued before 1st February 2001. A car license also acts as a provisional license for large bikes. This means that a car driver can take a Compulsory basic training (CBT) course at any of the numerous motorcycle training centres around the country, and then ride up to 125cc with L plates for the life of the CBT license. From 1st February 2001 all new car license holders must take CBT before riding any motorcycle on the road.
